Topaz ( Aluminum silicate fluoride hydroxide) is a common gemstone that has been used for centuries in jewelry. Its golden brown to yellow color is classic but is confused with the less valuable citrine, which is sometimes sold under the name topaz. The blue topaz that is often confused with aquamarine is rarely natural and is produced by irradiating and then heating clear crystals

הטופז היא מינרל שמכיל אלומיניום ופלואור והיא נקראת בעברית פטדה.
הטופז הטהור הוא למעשה שקוף. זיהומים מוסיפים לו צבע, הנפוץ ביותר הוא הצבע הצהוב.

מקור השם טופז - מהמילה היוונית טופזוס שמשמעה "לחפש".
זהו למעשה שמו של אי בים האדום שהיה קשה למוצאו ושם נהגו לכרות אבן חן צהבהבה.
מכיוון שבימי הביניים נהגו לכנות כל אבן חן צהבהבה בשם טופז, "נדבק" השם לאבן חן זו.
